Amethysts are a semi-precious variety of quartz formed in high heat environments, and most often found in geodes made of volcanic rock. They range in color from dark purple to a pale pink violet, but are most often rich in hue. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word 'amethystos', which translates to 'not drunken', as it was believed amethysts could counter intoxication. These chipped beads vary in width and height, but have been smoothed.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
