The stone known as jade is actually one of two different minerals with very similar appearance, but different chemical composition. Nephrite jade is the more common variety and contains calcium and magnesium, where jadeite jade is more rare, and contains sodium and aluminum. Lower grade varieties of jade are often enhanced by bleaching (to improve translucency) and dying in a variety of colors. These flattened rectangular beads measure 8x12mm, and are a rich shade of ruby red.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
