Named for the Achates River in Ancient Greece (now the Dirillo River in present-day Sicily), agate is a type of translucent quartz banded with chalcedony. Agates have a wide variety of descriptive names inspired by their various colorations, patterns, and regional origin. These flattened rectangular beads are slightly convex and measure 15x20mm. They are predominantly black, striped with browns and whites.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
