Named for the Achates River in Ancient Greece (now the Dirillo River in present-day Sicily), agate is a type of translucent quartz banded with chalcedony. Agates have a wide variety of descriptive names inspired by their various colorations, patterns, and regional origin. These irregularly shaped beads are smoothed and range in size from 7-12mm. They are predominantly black, striped with browns and whites.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
