Shell beads are made from marine shells as a byproduct of their harvesting for food or sometimes for pearls. Although many sea creatures have shells, the ones prized for bead making are usually mollusk shells. The layers of shell are usually made of an outer prismatic layer and an inner pearly or nacreous layer. The brilliant colors and patterns in shell beads come from the naturally occurring pigments in seashells and the shells of some land snails.
