Jean D. Barstow - Luck Be a Ladybug
Category: Body Adornment.
Body: Two brick-stitched ivy leaves joined at the bottom and side edges. The neckchain consists of a brick stitched chain of red ladybugs with an additional chain of green branched fringe. Red white-heart beads accent the ladybug chain.
My entry was inspired by the myth that Iadybugs are lucky. I cannot trace the roots of this myth, but I know that it exists, because when I questioned my grade school aged daughter Tricia and her friends, they knew, somehow, that ladybugs are lucky, just as children know that a pot of gold exists at the end of every rainbow.
I do not know about the actual luck that has been bestowed on me by these small creatures. I do know that here, in my home state of Maine, last autumn, we were overrun with ladybugs- in the garden, in the house, in my houseplants (note the ivy leaf!), everywhere one turned- ladybugs! One would think with such numerous sightings to my credit, I would be a Megabucks winner by now (and I am not!). None the less, I feel that the smiles that the bugs evoked and the anticipation of luck brought on by these jewels of nature fulfilled the promise of luck and I know that I felt lucky, indeed, each time I found one.
