Susan R. Starkey - The Celestial Unicorn

Category: wall-hanging

The lady on the unicorn was outlined onto stiff white chair backing. I used bead embroidery to create this appliqué, which was then sewn onto Navy Empress Velveteen. I also used bead embroidery to create the illusion of a flowing nighttime sky with stars.

The Story:

Xana enjoys listening to the tales told by her grandparents, especially the tale about the animals who could not withstand frigid temperatures. One of these animals was a unicorn, who slept unaware of the cold and slowly his body froze. He did not die but was eventually encased in a block of ice.

As time progressed, Xana became obsessed with finding the unicorn. Her grandmother's rug, which displayed a woven image of the unicorn, served as a catalyst to put Xana in touch with the unicorn with whom she was now enamored.

The many dreams of finding the unicorn finally came to fruition. The massive block of ice which housed the unicorn was slowly chipped away until he was free. As he emerged, all who viewed him had a sense of fear and awe and therefore a boulder wall was built to enclose him and leather hobbles were placed on his legs.

Years passed and Xana relished every moment that she viewed the unicorn through the boulder wall, wanting to take measures to free him. An opportune moment arose when the guard was found asleep. Gingerly she stepped over the guard, mounted the unicorn, and he was liberated from his prison.
