Linda Karel Sage - Theseus, Ariadne and the Minotaur

Category: Body Adornment.

Square stitch was used to make the Minotaur, and the faces of Theseus and Ariadne were imbedded as a mosaic on a sculpey base.

In Greek Myth, the minotaur lived in a maze into which, each year, young people were sent to be sacrificed. None of them were able to discover the way out of the maze, and so were killed (maybe eaten!) by the Minotaur. Ariadne, the daughter of the king, fell in love with Theseus, and when she learned that he was going to enter the labyrinth, she devised a plan to save his life. She gave him a ball of string which he was to attach to the entrance and unwind as he went in so that he could retrace his steps. He did so, killing the Minotaur with his bare hands on the way before returning to the entrance. He then told Ariadne that he would be back for her after he cleared up a few matters back home, but the rat never came back--how typical!
