Sue Maguire - Grail
Category: Sculpture.
Grail is worked entirely in tubular peyote stitch.
"Grail" was inspired by the Arthurian legend of the quest for the Holy Grail. Said to be the vessel or cup used at the Last Supper it was reputedly brought to the Vales of Avalon (the future site of Glastonbury) by Joseph of Aramathea. It became the quest of Arthur's knights of the Round Table to find the Grail, which possessed the supernatural power of nourishment. Only Galahad was deemed chaste and saintly enough to be worthy of succeeding in the quest. On seeing the Grail he died in ecstasy!
The design was particularly influenced by the Irish Ardagh Chalice and the colors by the fabulous medieval enameled chalices in the British Museum.
