Delphina - Phoenix Rising
Category: Body Adornment. Designed as part of a belly-dancing costume.
The feathers for the body are ladder stitch up the center and brick stitch for the vanes. The head and body are gourd stitch, with netting around the bottom. The tail feathers are the same as the body with the addition of fringe, and the wings are the same as the body but with the addition of a wire which was stitched into them as they were made. The crest feathers are wires with beads strung on them and placed in the bird's head.
Many cultures have legends of the Phoenix. In Russia it is good luck to find a Firebird's feather. In China and Japan it is depicted in pairs and is an omen for great and wonderful events. In Persia, Turkey, and India the Phoenix is associated with young lovers and great kings. In all these lands there is one thread, one belief that binds all these representations into one.
Once in a thousand years the Great Phoenix flies south to the lands of heat and sands, to Egypt and the great pyramid of Ra (the sun god). There the phoenix dies and is consumed within a fire of its own making and from this fire a new Phoenix is born and takes wing.
