Jill S. Cremer - Elvis, in the guise of a phoenix, rises from the ashes

“Elvis, in the guise of a phoenix, rises from the ashes”
Category: Sculpture.
Tubular peyote stitch and sculptural peyote was woven over a modeling -compound armeture to make “Elvis”.

The phoenix myth is described succinctly by the Oxford American Dictionary as “a mythical bird of the Arabian desert, said to live for hundreds of years and then burn itself on a funeral pyre, rising from its ashes, young again, to live for another cycle.”

This phoenix is presented as a bird freshly risen from his pyre, feathers ruffled and ready to fly. But he shields his eyes from the flames.

As I was working on this piece, early on, I looked at what I had created thus far and began to laugh. He had taken on a strong resemblance to that other legend of our times, Elvis! Beaded and Beadazzling, Elvis has risen many times from the ashes of his demise to live (and be seen) again. I think he resides in this sculpture.
