Elvis, in the guise of a phoenix, rises from the ashes
Category: Sculpture.
Tubular peyote stitch and sculptural peyote was woven over a modeling -compound armeture to make Elvis.
The phoenix myth is described succinctly by the Oxford American Dictionary as a mythical bird of the Arabian desert, said to live for hundreds of years and then burn itself on a funeral pyre, rising from its ashes, young again, to live for another cycle.
This phoenix is presented as a bird freshly risen from his pyre, feathers ruffled and ready to fly. But he shields his eyes from the flames.
As I was working on this piece, early on, I looked at what I had created thus far and began to laugh. He had taken on a strong resemblance to that other legend of our times, Elvis! Beaded and Beadazzling, Elvis has risen many times from the ashes of his demise to live (and be seen) again. I think he resides in this sculpture.
