Lisa Ann Claver - Quetzalcoatl

Category: Sculpture.
This piece was constructed with flat peyote, the arms were done with circular even count peyote and branch fringe.

I have always been fascinated with the Aztec culture. Quetzalcoatl, a mythological figure of the Mesoamerican pantheon, blends the heavens and earth. For the Aztec, Quetzalcoatl was the symbol of death and resurrection. It was foretold that the return of Quetzalcoatl would result in the destruction of the Aztec Empire. The inspiration for my entry was taken from the beginning of the end of the Aztec culture. This piece is my interpretation of how Montezuma must have viewed Hernand Cortez. Upon hearing of the approach of Cortez, Montezuma, leader of the Aztecs, feared this was the sign of QuetzalcoatlÕs return, and his hesitation in opposing Cortez lead to the destruction of the Pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico.
