Mary Fraser - Millions of Cats

Category: Body Adornment.

This piece was inspired by the book, Millions of Cats, by Wanda Gag. This book was a favorite of mine as a young child.

I have done creative work all of my life. My grandmother and mother taught me sewing and embroidery. I have been beading for about 6 years now. I enjoy taking and giving bead classes because I always learn something from being with other beaders. I use square stitch for most of the beaded purses I make. I am always on the outlook for antique frames to use with my purses. In addition to making purses, I make many other beaded items. Buying beads is my hobby. Creating with beads is my passion.

The Entry--I choose the myth, "Millions of Cats." It is a favorite story of my childhood. I love cats and live with two cats in California. I made the purse using square stitch and made the fringe using branched fringe and more than 100 glass beaded cats!

The Story: Million of Cats is about an old couple that wanted a cat. The old man walked through the hills looking for a cat. He came to hill covered with cats. He decided to pick the prettiest cat, but every place he looked, he saw a cat prettier than the rest. So he took all the cats home. When he got home with all of the cats, the old woman told her husband that they could never feed all of the cats. The old man asked the cats who was the prettiest. The cats began to quarrel and fought and took off. There was only one thin scraggly frightened kitten left. This kitten thought it was homely so it didn't say anything and the other cats left it alone. The old man and old woman brushed the cat and every day gave it plenty of milk and it became the most beautiful cat in the world.
