Lisa Ring - Jungle Book
Category: Body Adornment.
My entry, Jungle Book, was conceived at a 4th of July party in 1998. Up till then, I could not come up with an idea for the second Delica Challenge, and time was running out! I wanted to make another Big Cat design, and had to come up with a myth or folk tale that would fit the bill. We all brainstormed, and Jungle Book was born, consisting of Bagheera the Black Panther, Shere Khan the Red Tiger and Kaa the Snake. The body of the bag is worked in tubular peyote, with brick-stitch leaves appliquéd on top. The fringe consists of over 100 brick-stitched leaves woven into the branched fringe. The braided strap features Kaa the snake, created from peyote tubes and a brick-stitched head, and is embellished with more branches and leaves.
The JUNGLE BOOK, Rudyard Kiplings classic folktale, tells the stony of little Mowgli, an orphan raised in the jungle by wolves, and his many adventures accompanied by his best friends BaIoo, the bear and Bagheera, the BIack panther.
I am a self-taught beader with no formal artistic training but I have been working with my hands for as long as I can remember. I started making beaded jewelry in 1991, and evolved to bead weaving in 1994. I began making amulet bags using other people's patterns and eventually got brave enough to start designing my own. Laguna Moon was one of my first designs and I was so proud to have it pictured in the first Delica Challenge book. For a special birthday present for my Mom, I designed my first Big Cat bag, the Red Tiger, followed by the White Tiger, Leopard, Black Panther and Lion. I had so many requests for my designs that I started selling kits and patterns in 1998. My work can be viewed at my website:
