The feminine spirit of the oak tree, in Greek mythology, is known as a dryad or tree nymph. Dryads were believed to inhabit or preside over the oak for its entire life span. Like their masculine counterparts, druids, they were considered aspects of Diane, the goddess who reigned over thunder and lightning. They could alternate between human and arboreal forms.
