Linda H. Perry - Mother Earth
Category: Sculpture.
Single and two-drop peyote, single and multiple drop brick stitch, plain and erratic square stitch, my own dragon scale stitch, horizontal netting, branched fringe, and a lot of WIT (whatever it takes) stitch.
From Neolithic fertility goddesses to contemporary Native American beliefs, the earth mother myth spans both history and cultures.
Historically, some of the better known examples are the Sumerian Inana, Indian Sakti, Greek Gaea and Demeter, Babylonian Ishtar, Egyptian Isis, Finnish Akka, the Ibo's Ala, Maori Papatuanuka and Hawaiian Pele.
Modern day beliefs run the gamut from serious spiritual practices to facetious 'Mother Nature' butter commercials, to using Mother Earth as an ecological symbol, to science fiction authors exploring sentient worlds.
