Katherine Meredith - Medusa

Category: Body adornment.
Loom work, random peyote stitch, branched fringe and surface embellishment.

A friend introduced me to the world of beading while on a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. We saw an advertisement for a local bead shop and decided to investigate. The number and variety of beads overwhelmed me. That day my bill came to $35.00. As I walked out of the shop I declared, "I will never work with these little things." The rest, as they say, is history.

This is the second Miyuki Delica Challenge in which I have participated. In the first competition, I was fortunate to receive the "Employees Choice Award" for my entry "Charlie Tuna."

"Medusa" was created during one of life's challenges. Just as the creative process began I was informed it looked like we would be moving. It was during the packing, traveling, and subsequent unpacking that Medusa was born.

There is no news to share concerning "Medusa." She has not been exposed to the public like "Charlie Tuna." "Charlie" has gained notoriety through the years. The latest chapter in his life could be compared to winning the lottery. One of my neighbors informed me that he is the General Manager of Star-Kist. I showed him the book "The Sea" and introduced him to "Charlie Tuna." He was astounded and took all the information to the corporate leadership of Star-Kist. At this time we are waiting to hear about the possibility of "Charlie" being displayed either at the corporate offices or at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center.

This past year I have begun teaching classes at the Bead Mine located in Pittsburgh's famous "South Side." I have also been designing and selling original pieces.

It would be my pleasure to communicate by e-mail with fellow beaders and people interested in knowing more about the fascinating art of beading. I can be reached at 7fields.nospam@sgi.net.

[For visitors who do not own a copy of The Sea, here is a snapshot of "Charlie."]
